What Is Claude Fable 5? Why the Most Powerful Public AI Was Pulled

Lady working in office confidently with AI Pocket Rocket skillsimeline showing launch on 9 June 2026 and withdrawal on 12 June 2026

A new AI model launched, then vanished 3 days later. Here's the plain English story, and why it matters for how we use AI responsibly.

What is Claude Fable 5?

Released to the public on 9 June 2026, Claude Fable 5 became the newest and most powerful AI model Anthropic had ever made public. It sits in a new top tier called "Mythos-class," ranking above their previous best, Claude Opus. Think of it as the new leader on the podium.

How is it different from the other models?

Fable 5 has a twin called Mythos 5. They are the same underlying model. The distinction is access control. Fable 5 is the version with extra safety guardrails built in, which is why it was the one made safe for everyday people. Finout

Who was it built for, and why?

Fable 5 was built for the public, businesses, and everyday users who want serious AI power for big, complex tasks. Its twin Mythos 5 was built for a small, vetted group: a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers, through a program with the US Government. The idea was simple: give the powerful, unguarded version only to trusted experts.

The safety features, in 5 quick points

(and why they matter to us at AI Pocket Rocket, where ethical AI is a core value)

  • Fable 5 uses new "classifiers," which are separate AI systems that detect potential misuse, including jailbreak attempts, and prevent the main model from responding. Anthropic

  • When a risky request is spotted, it gets handed to a safer model. When the classifiers detect a request related to cybersecurity, biology and chemistry, or distillation, the response is automatically handled by Claude Opus 4.8 instead. Anthropic

  • Practical example: if someone asks Fable 5 to help exploit a software security flaw, the classifier catches it and quietly reroutes the question to a less powerful model, rather than letting the strongest AI answer.

  • Why that matters: the more powerful the model, the more dangerous a wrong answer is. Keeping the most capable model away from misuse means the strongest tool never becomes the strongest weapon. This is safe, responsible AI in action.

  • It rarely gets in the way. The safeguards trigger in less than 5% of sessions on average, users are told when the fallback occurs, and you aren't charged Fable prices for rerouted requests. SecurityBrief + 2

Why was it pulled, and is it coming back?

Here is the twist. A US export control directive forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 (and its sibling Mythos 5) on 12 June 2026, just 3 days after launch. The order suspended access for any foreign national, inside or outside the United States. Because there is no practical way to check nationality on every account in real time, Anthropic switched the model off for everyone. The good news: Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5 are unaffected. This is a recall, not an outage. Anthropic says it believes the order is a misunderstanding and is working to restore access as soon as possible.

What does a "jailbreak" mean in AI?

A jailbreak is when someone tricks an AI into ignoring its safety rules and doing something it is built not to do. Picture safety rules as guardrails on a mountain trail, and a jailbreak as slipping through a gap in the fence. In this case, the government believes it found a jailbreak for Fable 5, though Anthropic disputes this.  Developers Digest Fable5

The lesson for your business

Never hard-wire one AI model into anything critical. "Generally available" can vanish overnight. Know your reliable workhorses, use the right-sized tool for the job (better for your budget and the planet), and keep moving forward no matter which model is up or down. Frequently asked questions

When was Claude Fable 5 released?

Claude Fable 5 was released to the public on 9 June 2026.

When was Claude Fable 5 withdrawn?

It was withdrawn on 12 June 2026, just 3 days after launch, due to a US government export control order.

Is Claude Fable 5 available now?

No. It is currently suspended worldwide. All other Claude models, including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6, are still working normally.

Why was Claude Fable 5 pulled?

A US government export control directive ordered Anthropic to suspend access for any foreign national. Because nationality cannot be verified in real time, Anthropic disabled it for everyone.

What is a jailbreak in AI?

A jailbreak is a trick that gets an AI to ignore its built-in safety rules and respond to requests it is designed to refuse.

Does Claude Fable 5 use more energy than other models?

Anthropic has not published per-query energy figures. However, Fable 5 costs about double Opus 4.8 per use for only a small performance gain, which suggests it uses more compute. For everyday tasks, a lighter model is the more sustainable choice.
